SOUTH LOCH NESS HERITAGE GROUP

The Music of
Captain Simon Fraser of Knockie

Presented by Alan Findlay and illustrated by the playing of Duncan Dyker and Eric Allan

Captain Simon Fraser (1773-1852) spent most of his life at Knockie.   He was a superb fiddler and composer, as well as a collector of Highland airs.   These, along with his own compositions, comprise what is now usually called ‘The Knockie Collection’, which has a unique Highland flavour.

Duncan Dyker is the leader of the Inverness Fiddlers, a champion fiddler in his own right, as well as a piper – the pipes actually being his first instrument.

Eric Allan was until recently depute leader of the Fiddlers, plays fiddle, piano and guitar, and along with his wife Helen has published many collections of Scots fiddle music.

Alan Findlay is a leading member of the South Loch Ness Heritage Group, as well as describing himself as a “back-bencher“ with the Fiddlers.

We are so lucky to be able to illustrate Alan’s talk with two such eminent musicians. The evening should give a rare insight into this branch of music, which will be of interest to the majority of us who just listen and admire, as well as to players of all standards.

As usual, there will be no admission charge for this evening, but there will be a collection plate at the door. The SLNHG finances its activities through your donations.

The management committee of the Heritage Group is becoming seriously depleted. We have been without a secretary for a long time now, and, after this meeting we it will have no Chairman either. Another active member has relocated to Badenoch. Some new blood is urgently needed if the Group is to carry on. It’s really not very onerous, in fact it is not work at all if you are interested in the subject, but every now and then a group needs a new energy source.
